With more wind and solar coming on the grid, longer duration storage than that provided by Li-ion batteries (2-4 hours) will be needed to shift excess production to times of demand. Inlyte has developed a low-cost, salt-iron battery for grid storage, well-suited for 4+ hour durations. This alternative chemistry is also fire-safe and does not rely on scarce lithium.
